20 cases only. Château de Pibarnon's rosé has long been accepted as one of Bandol’s very finest. As of the 2014 vintage, that wine now has some high-quality company.Nuances is a 100% Mourvèdre micro-cuvée, crafted from fruit selected in the vineyard for it's outstanding depth and potential to mature in bottle. The 2014 was drawn from a single hectare of low yielding (30 hl/ha) Mourvèdre vines in a limestone site called la parcelle du Col. Like the Mourvèdre for the cuvée classique, the grapes are bled saignée style, receiving several hours of skin contact. Fermentation is with natural yeasts in both clay amphora and stainless steel, before the wine is blended and raised in a large, 30-hectolitre Stockinger foudre. Opening with alluring scents of bramble, blood-orange and spice, the palate is textured and silky with surprising depth and a saline minerality gifted by Pibarnon's unique highland terroir. It’s one hell of a rosé folks, and simply a gorgeous wine by any standard.

Importer Note:

Pibarnon’s vineyard on La Colline du Télégraphe. This is Bandol’s highest vineyard (at 300 metres above the Baie de Bandol) and faces the sea directly. Here the vines enjoy the freshness and cool nights of the altitude as well as the moderating sea breezes. A peculiar soil type predominates, les marnes bleues. This uncommon and highly chalky blue clay, rich in microfossils, is also sometimes seen in the Jura and Pomerol, where it is also prized for its water-retentive properties and its influence on a wine’s freshness and structure.

The first piece of news is that Château de Pibarnon has released a new, prestige Bandol rosé that we offer for the first time below. Pibarnon’s Nuances rosé is a 100% Mourvèdre micro-cuvée, raised in foudre (large oak) and amphora, that is intended for release in the French Autumn, two years after harvest. By offering the wine with some age, Éric de Saint-Victor’s plan is to offer a more complex, potent, and spicy style of Bandol rosé that could be sipped over the cooler months, and indeed for several years into the future (at least). 2014 is the inaugural vintage and the wine is both outstanding and very different from Pibarnon’s cuvée classique. Read more below. Alongside this limited-release Rosé, we have also shipped the 2012 Restanques rouge – a mighty elegant red from a cooler season – and, for the first time, a little of Pibarnon’s gorgeously mellow Vieux Marc de Bandol 1993. Three wines that offer definitive proof – if it was needed – that this is a Bandol domaine in sublime form.
