This producer is at the top tier for a reason. Based in the highly regarded village of Chavignol, this isn't your average Sauvignon Blanc & often compared to the more prestigious wines of Burgundy. The balance of fruit weight, texture & tension is a signature which reflects the minimal intervention, consideration and uniqueness of place. 2015 is a very highly regarded classic vintage to buy. Very Limited. - Brendon F

Importer Note:

I know it’s a wine that needs little introduction to many clients but for those who are new to this producer, here goes. The Tradition is drawn from several parcels of mature, 35-40 year old vines rooted entirely in the limestone soils of Chavignol (far and away the finest terroir of Sancerre). Boulay’s sources are largely hillside vineyards on the lower flank of the Monts-Damnés hill, and the more undulating, lower lying vineyards that lie opposite. Boulay also includes fruit from the younger vines in his crus of Les Monts Damnés and the Beaujeu. The juice is naturally fermented and aged for eight months in tank, on lees, with a small volume also fermented in a single large, upright fermenter. Tradition is the only blended cuvée in the Boulay line up, yet even here we can taste the kind of finesse, texture and stony, earthy and salty minerality that has made this humble grower one of France’s most respected. The intense lime and lemon pith, white floral and ripe stone fruit aromas and flavours remind of great Riesling and even white burgundy, while the subtle herb and chalk dust characters are all Chavignol. The 2015 is already drinking brilliantly with wave after wave of vibrant, textured yet crystalline fruit and a precise, rocky close. There’s even a subtle yet delicious kiss of honeysuckle that scents the breath after swallowing. Play it again, Gérard.

“To my palate, Gérard Boulay is undoubtedly on the top tier of producers in Chavignol. His wines have a vibrant purity, evident ripeness, feel devoid of any raw varietal character and reflect the soils from which they are born. Indeed, in terms of purity and daringly racy, I do wonder whether he shouldn't be placed at the very top of the tier. I certainly find his wines sufficiently exciting, breath-taking in their assured poise, to suggest this might be the case.” Chris Kissack,
