Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc Blends

Like all great pairings – Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz Cabernet… Batman and Robin – the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The fruitiness of Sauvignon adds body and complexity to the crisp acidity of the Semillon, while the citrus tones of the Semillon keep the aromatic nature of Sauvignon Blanc in line! Ultimately Sauvignon Blanc gives the wine its aroma and raciness while Semillon gives it backbone and longevity. Of course, each grape can be enjoyed as single varietal wines, but there is something to be said for a good blend.

In Bordeaux, the blend is known as Bordeaux Blanc and tends to be a fuller-bodied white, that is often oaked. Most Bordeaux regions produce a version of Bordeaux Blanc, but the subregion of Graves is the only appellation that has a classification for dry white wines.

In Australia, the Margaret River has wholly embraced the Bordeaux tradition of blending Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, to great success. The Sem/Sauv blends from Australia are usually crisp, dry styles with fresh fruit characters and a good acid structure. They see little or no oak, and are usually intended to be drunk young. A wine to be chilled down on a warm Summer’s day, and served alongside a plate of fresh seafood.
