Semillon

Another Bordeaux native varietal, Semillon is used to make both sweet and dry white wines. In Bordeaux, it is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc to create the Bordeaux Blanc style. These wines are usually dry, with crisp acidity and lighter fruit characters. In Sauternes, it is also blended with Sauvignon Blanc, but allowed to be affected by Botrytis, to create the world-renowned dessert style wines, such as Chateau d’Yquem.

Outside of Bordeaux, it is Australia’s own Hunter Valley that has championed Semillon as a single varietal white wine. The Semillon grown and produced in the Hunter tends to be light, crisp wine with varietal lemon and lime characters when it is young. One of the outstanding qualities of Hunter Semillon is the ability of the wines to age. A good vintage can produce wines that will cellar for 20 to 30 years, and occasionally more. Aged Semillon shows characters of honey and nuts, with a distinctive buttered toast note. Whether you enjoy them young and focused, or aged and expansive, Hunter Valley Semillon is truly a world-class wine!
