36 bottles only (in Australia). Pascal and Charles Lachaux look after a thin, 0.7 hectares strip of vines in the Les Rouges du Bas climat. This lieu-dit stretches high up the Côte alongside 1er Les Beaux Monts. There is very little topsoil before the vines hit the hard limestone (similar to that found in Premeaux), so the wine offers tremendous finesse, perfume and texture. A wine to remind us why the vines of Echezeaux (and Flagey in general) have so often been grouped with those of Vosne. Serious seduction and class on offer here.

“Here the floral character is even more evident with a strikingly fresh nose of black cherry aromas that are amply cut with a variety of spice and discreet earth notes. The moderately broad-shouldered and velvet-textured flavors possess excellent precision on the mouth coating, firm and entirely serious finish that displays outstanding length. Well worth considering.” 92-94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound, Issue 61

Importer Note:

If there was an official dictionary of Burgundy and you looked up “progress”, two of the words you would surely find would be “Charles and Lachaux”. The young Lachaux, inspired by good friends and mentors like Olivier Lamy, has been pushing the standards of his vineyard work to such high levels that he is even making some of his most famous neighbours in Vosne look a little old fashioned. He has also radically altered his family’s approach in the cellar, in a few short years, introducing whole bunches where there were none used before and strongly diminishing the percentage of new oak used. While his father Pascal (who still works in the Domaine), was already doing great things, the son has certainly brought a new approach and fresh energy in his pursuit to craft the finest possible wines from his family’s legendary terroirs. The wines here are brighter, purer and longer than they have ever been. As the notes and scores below make clear, 2014 is an outstanding vintage here.
