Winery Note:

“The reference standard producer (in Suchots) is Domaine Robert Arnoux ... Pascal Lachaux produces ‘grand cru’ quality Suchots in nearly every vintage as there is just another dimension and complexity relative to most other examples.” Allen Meadows, The Pearl of the Côte

36 bottles only (into Australia). From a 0.45 hectare parcel at the very top of the vineyard. This part of Suchots was known (and labelled) as Grands Suchots until the ’70s. As Allen Meadows makes clear, this wine is widely acknowledged as the benchmark Suchots and it is easy to see why when you look at the situation of the vines, tucked up against the border of Romanée-Saint-Vivant. Like his father before him, in a tasting of the Estate’s wines, Charles Lachaux serves this after all of the grand crus, bar Romanée-Saint-Vivant, which tells you a lot about where this wine sits in the pecking order (as does the pricing). The whole bunch percentage here is the same as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant (100%). Suchots is home to the Domaine’s oldest vines, with the lions share now in their mid-90s.

“Don’t Miss! On the nose it's as though the Reignots and Suchots have switched places as this is much, much more restrained with its intensely floral red berry and spice suffused nose that merges seamlessly into impressively rich and full-bodied middle weight flavors that possess just a hint of minerality on the hugely long and palate staining finish. This lightly austere and beautifully well-balanced effort is an obvious wine of class and grace.” 93-95 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound, Issue 61

Importer Note:

If there was an official dictionary of Burgundy and you looked up “progress”, two of the words you would surely find would be “Charles and Lachaux”. The young Lachaux, inspired by good friends and mentors like Olivier Lamy, has been pushing the standards of his vineyard work to such high levels that he is even making some of his most famous neighbours in Vosne look a little old fashioned. He has also radically altered his family’s approach in the cellar, in a few short years, introducing whole bunches where there were none used before and strongly diminishing the percentage of new oak used. While his father Pascal (who still works in the Domaine), was already doing great things, the son has certainly brought a new approach and fresh energy in his pursuit to craft the finest possible wines from his family’s legendary terroirs. The wines here are brighter, purer and longer than they have ever been. As the notes and scores below make clear, 2014 is an outstanding vintage here.
