There is nothing Young about these vines anymore. The vineyard was planted in 2000 and we still see a stylistic difference between the juice of the original blocks of fruit we planted in 1975.  We  will continue to make the ‘young vines riesling’, now identifiable to so many of our clients until we see them blend well together.

Bright, fresh floral elements are the primary impression given by this young wine.  Spice and texture underpin the soft palate, which shows even structure with lively acidity.  Elegant throughout, with hints of oyster shell and citrus peel, this wine will make for delicious summer drinking and well beyond.

The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed.

Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the two main varieties in the vineyard, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

All major activities such as picking, pruning, leaf-plucking, shoot-thinning and green pruning are done by hand.

Our vineyard is maintained without the use of herbicides nor insecticides. We use organic practices and have a bio-dynamic test plot that Belinda has prepared and will plant Riesling towards the end of 2014.

Rainfall is generally reliable, with much of the 650mm average falling in Winter and Spring. At Latitude 38° South and 110 metres above sea-level, temperatures are cool. Situated approximately 50 kilometres inland from the Southern Ocean, the vineyard enjoys its moderating maritime influence whilst managing to escape most of the Autumn sea mists.

The combination of these factors produces a long and even growing season helping to produce grapes with intense fruit flavours and high natural acidity.  Whilst our dry grown vineyard enjoys low yields, some years require careful manipulation of bunch numbers, ensuring the highest possible fruit quality.  Budburst is usually mid-September with picking from mid-April to mid-May.

Our wines are crafted exclusively from hand-picked and selected fruit grown at our estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site.  The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to detail. Patience and time are of the essence in our winery.

We believe in minimal interference and movement during vinification, preferring the fruit to naturally express our special terroir.  It is our belief this approach influences the pure, elegant quality of our end product.

Since 2005 there has been a happy confluence of young and older at Crawford River wines.  While professionally trained and with numerous international vintages under her belt, Belinda knows there is no substitute for John´s more than 35 years of experience in the Estate vineyard he created.
