It's as though they have Bordeaux wine running through their blood... Well they do! The pedigree of this family is evident in this wines structure, distinctive character and elegance. In it's youth it is fine grained and integrated showing classical Cabernet characteristics of cassis and dried forrest floor accompanied by hints of tomato leaf. I don't really love Australian Cabernet, but when it's made like this I love it!

Winerey Note:

The Portet family boasts ten consecutive generations of winemaking that began in Bordeaux in the 18th century. Today, the Portet name is most closely associated with the Yarra Valley where father and son team Dominique and Ben Portet, respectively ninth and tenth generation winemakers, run a successful family winery.

Dominique Portet’s French lineage dates back to 1720 and the family’s sale of eaux de vie to the Martell family. Several generations later his father André Portet became régisseur (vineyard and winery manager) of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac.

Dominique’s own training began at one of the world’s most illustrious red wine estates. He qualified at the Montpellier University in oenology and during a compulsory year of military service became the legion’s wine purchasing adviser, responsible for the soldiers’ daily wine ration. Further enhancing his qualifications, Dominique spent vintages in the Médoc, the Rhône Valley, Provence and with world Champagne giant,Moët Chandon.

Subsequently, Dominique joined his brother Bernard at Clos du Val in California’s Napa Valley, where he spent three vintages, a period that coincided with his New World search for vineyards to equal his native Bordeaux. That quest ultimately led to the establishment of two distinguished labels – Taltarni in 1976 in the Victorian Pyrenees, and later Clover Hill in northeast Tasmania.

‘I’m at home here, I know my roots are here.’ DOMINIQUE PORTET

Today Dominique Portet and his eponymous label, established in 2000, are firmly planted in the Yarra Valley where Dominique purchased a small vineyard and built a winery and cellar door.

‘Here I found wines with a fragrance and structure reminiscent of the wines of Bordeaux. The Yarra has a charm and a beauty that engulfs you, and its wines are worldly.’

The Portet’s winemaking tradition continues with wife Julia and sons Ben, Thomas and Henri all involved in the family enterprise. Thomas lives in Denmark and keeps an eye on export, while Henri runs his university wine club. Ben, the 10th generation winemaker studied at Adelaide University, travelled widely in France, South Africa and America (Napa Valley) and returned to the family Yarra Valley winery to work alongside his father and continue the family tradition of uncompromising winemaking.
