Distributor Note:

Made in a pure-fruited, medium bodied style that takes its inspiration from Burgundy rather than northern Italy or Alsace, this finely weighted Gris is drawn from a south-facing site in Merricks. The fruit was hand sorted in the vineyard and winery, then whole bunch pressed into to old barriques to ferment using indigenous yeasts. The wine only goes through partial malolactic, to preserve freshness and was matured on its lees in old neutral barrel for 6 months.

No fan of the nondescript, structure-free Gris style that abounds, Barney's versions are well-defined and refreshing examples. Apple-tangy and creamy in the mouth, its charismatic flavours fall between the spiced apple/pear and stone fruit spectrum and the wine finishes with rippling citrus-laden dryness and notes of nutmeg and honey. Quality.

"A mid-straw-copper-pink hue and packed with flavour - not too much. The right amount of spiced pears drizzled with honey, creamy lees and grilled nuts. And a neat line of acidity keeping the wine dancing along to a persistent finish." 94 points, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

Distributor Note:

Anyone with even a passing interest in cool-climate Australia will already know that Garagiste is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars. Barnaby Flanders created the Garagiste label following his amicable split with Allies co-founder David Chapman (who continues with the Allies label). ‘Barney’ now focuses on a snug range of small-batch wines from fruit sourced from the highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, the Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring), and the Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Garagiste, the main label, is ably supported by delicious entry-level wines under the Le Stagiaire banner. Barnaby and Cam (Marshall) manage all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking themselves and a range of succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is what results. We’ve been on the look out for a quality Mornington producer for ages, one that isn’t a slave to fashion and doesn’t charge like a horde of agitated wildebeest. Garagiste fits the bill very nicely indeed. Hey-Diddly-Ho, as Mr Flanders’ cartoon namesake might utter.
