Australia’s answer to, and many respects usurper, of high end Bordeaux Blanc. Indeed, why ape the benchmark when you can be the benchmark? It’s biodynamic farmed fruit, as is the work of the Morey’s of Beechworth, sees some barrel and lees time, slow to bottle, complex in return. This is possibly the greatest release of this wine. There, it’s said. Someone across my office (a relative wine layman) just yelled out, ‘What the fuck is this wine? Far out it is good!’. ’nuff said, almost…

It’s composed, elegant, svelte, succulent, complex, fantastic drinking white wine here. Beautifully perfumed, rich in fruit, lively and fresh in minerally acidity, licked by soft, savoury nuttiness and doused with gentle spice of wood – epic length of flavour too. It’s the sum of many parts but completely seamless, which can equate to boring, but this wine is so far from it. In the end, the draining of my glass, indeed a shake out and sip at the dead ends at the rim, said enough for me. A near flawless wine. It’ll cellar well too. One of Australia’s great, great wines. 97 Pts - Mike Bennie

Winery Note:

This wine comprises of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. Most of the Sauvignon Blanc fruit had 8 hours skin contact prior to pressing. The Semillon component is crushed and pressed immediately after picking. This wine was 100% barrel fermented with predominantly larger barrels used. All went through natural yeast fermentation. The extended lees contact helps fill out the middle palate and gives this wine the extra dimension it is known for.

Winery Note:

Sorrenberg Vineyard was established in 1984. It is a 3 hectare vineyard at an elevation of 560 meters.
Although the vineyard is granitic it does have the advantage of being on the border where the granite meets the red mudstone, giving the soil greater water holding capacity and the wine structure.
The finesse and elegance of Sorrenberg wines can be attributed to the fact that it is one of the highest vineyards on granite soil in the Beechworth region.
The varieties grown are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
The Rhino block named after Barry’s grandfathers vineyard was established in 2005 by Sorrenberg vineyard at an elevation of 595 meters.
This is a dry grown block on granite soils.
Varieties planted are Chardonnay and Gamay.
Both Sorrenberg vineyard and Rhino are certified biodynamic.
