Just like all of our other Stoney Rise Pinot Noirs the palate is initially very soft, there are some fresh strawberry and raspberry fruits, and hints of mocca and forest floor. The palate starts out fresh and juicy, and then the depth and structure of our older vine fruit kicks in and the wine finishes long and rather savoury. Whilst it is made to be enjoyed young, this wine will happily lie down for up to five years. - Winery Note

Stoney Rise Wine Company is located in the heart of the Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania, Australia. It is a family run boutique winery owned by Joe and Lou Holyman. In 2004 we returned to Tasmania with our sights set on growing and producing the best pinot noir and chardonnay we could. We purchased a vineyard that was planted in 1986 in the Tamar Valley, north of Launceston and set about doing just that. 2008 saw the construction of our winery on site. We love all things vinous, we take our wines and what we do rather seriously albeit with relaxed personalities we try and have the most amount of fun possible. Our philosophy on winemaking is to express the vintage. All of our grapes are picked, not by analysis but by grape composition. It is all about the colour and structure of the seeds, the texture of the skins and the ripeness of the stalks. Due to this, there can be variances in our final alcohols by more than 1% due to the seasons, however don't be afraid by this as it is all about the balance. We do not manipulate the wines in any way. We use only natural yeast, and the only thing we add to our wines are minimal amounts of sulphur. The Stoney Rise wines are made in an approachable style. For Stoney Rise Pinot Noir we only use old French oak to retain the freshness. We only have a small amount of Chardonnay so every year we make it the same way, and label it relative to the style. The Holyman Pinot Noir comes from a small 0.6 hectare block on our vineyard. We selectively pick the ripest stalks every year for a whole bunch component in the wine. This varies every year relative to the season, anywhere from 20% in 2009 to 50% in 2012. Every year we have a ferment of 100% whole bunch which we release in special years as "Project X". In only a few years, our dedication to this vineyard and our hands off approach to winemaking has seen us gain high praise from the wine press and a 5 star rating in the 2013 James Halliday Wine Companion. We will continue to work to grow the best grapes we can from the individual seasons. If you are ever in Tasmania, come and say hello. - Winery Note
