I met Rhen Dodd at a tasting event in Melbourne late last year and he mentioned he was farming a vineyard and making some wine. It wasn’t long after a wine arrived from him. It has been a long time to review, however, and mea culpa. Rhen works with a bloke called Dale Wheeler, and the two farm a vineyard in Yarra Valley that’s wonderfully named as Chum Creek. So chumpy you could carve it.

They farm the site organically and use biodynamic composts and sprays. This wine is sourced from there, and sees about 85% whole bunch used in the ferment. It’s not filtered or fined before bottling.

Pours a beautiful, vibrant dark purple in the glass. Glossy glints though. That glossiness doubles back in the palate, a slick sheet of pepper-spiked dark fruit that’s sprinkled with jags of dried herbal spice. It’s bound by smoky-dusty tannins and feels like flavours are dragged long to a building pucker and bergamot tea-like finish. Perfume is smoky, then herby, then dark fruity. Attractive. I’d be diving in if you dig whole bunch + Yarra + syrah + vibrant expressions of such.
