Importer's Note: "Aldo and Milena Vaira established G.D. Vajra in 1972 with some of the best vineyards in the Langhe. In total they own 25 hectares of vines with a further 10 hectares contracted for their production. They produce on average 100,000 bottles a year.

Aldo Vajra is a quiet man of few words but he and his wife Milena share an outsize enthusiasm for everything they do. Speaking of his philosophy Aldo says

“I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case, we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.”

Aldo Vajra and his children aim to make wines that express the terroirs of their vineyards, which are located in the Vergne zone of Barolo. The wines reflect their maker’s highly individual and personal style, they exhibit great nuance, elegance, and understatement, just like the man himself."

"This wine hails from three vineyards named Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta. These are sites of higher altitude and cooler microclimates in the Barolo sub-region, but are vineyards which also use a higher proportion of the rose' subvariety of Nebbiolo (roughly 20%), which contributes immeasurably to its resultant delicate fragrances. Although many producers avoid using this subvariety because of its lack of colour (hence the name), you could say that Vajra prove that at times, less is more. This wine has a black forest density on the nose with hints of pancetta, and with earthy, porcini-like tones to the finish. The tannins glide across the palate and the length is incredibly long. Albe means dawn, which is the artwork on the label.

Winemaking: Grapes are picked by hand and sorted manually, with the wild yeasts retained for natural alcoholic fermentation. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures up to 32°C and lasted three weeks. The wine was matured with approximately 5% in small French oak barrels with the remainder following a traditional Piedmontese winery and aged in 25/30hl Slovenian oak barrels. Vajra’s traditional winemaking philosophy continues with long maceration times (at free temperatures) and adequate ageing prior to release of the wines to the market.

Colour: An intense blood red

Nose: Ample and persistent bouquet of stewed fruit, earthy spices and mushroom scents

Palate: The palate evokes blood plum tones with cherries and a hint of oriental spice. With age, it develops more complex herbal characters.

Alc/Vol: 14.50% alc.

Ageing Capacity: 2015-2025"
