Raymond Chan's Notes from March 2013

"Dark, deep ruby-red with some purple hues, lighter on rim. The nose is very fragrant and lifted with violet and dark red florals, notes of raspberry jam and liqueur, liquorice and pepper, underlined by fresh dark herbs that build in depth and intensity. Medium-full bodied, elegant, compactly bound flavours of bright, soft red berry fruits are lifted by red floral elements. Fragrant, cooler spectrum herb and dried stalk whole bunch flavours are integral with the fruit. The mouthfeel is finely textured with refined tannin extraction, and alcohol and acidity provide cut and linearity. The structure becomes more prevalent on mid-palate and leads to a soft, dry and lightly nuanced finish. Possessing a complex bouquet this is a fine-grained, linear Pinot Noir with fragrant red fruits and herbal flavour underlay. Serve with salmon, tuna and poultry over the next 5-6 years. Clones 5 and 115 from vines planted 2001 in the Waitaki Valley, fermented with 20% whole bunch to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 34% new French oak barrels. 240 cases made. 18.0+/20"

Valli is the personal vocation of pioneering Otago winemaker, Grant Taylor. Grant’s name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been crafting wines in the region since 1993 when there were only 20 hectares planted - today there are over 1700. Grant’s accomplishments are well known in the wine world and he is credited with winning the Best Pinot Noir Trophy at a major International Wine Competition in London an unprecedented three times – a feat achieved by no other winemaker in the world.

During the past 19 years he has made the first wines for a number of iconic Otago wineries, but now the serious focus is on his own creation, Valli. Established in 1998 and named after his Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from and Italian winemaking background, Grant founded Valli with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity. This was also a first for the region – no one had attempted to capture, let alone master the developing subregional plot that has now begun to unfold as the next exciting chapter in the Otago wine story.

Valli, based around the close-planted estate vineyard in Gibbston, also produces Single-Vineyard Pinot Noirs from Bannockburn, Bendigo and another from Otago’s exciting new subregion, the Waitaki Valley. Valli also produces a dry Riesling from 31-year-old vines in the Alexandra basin and a botrytised Riesling, Dolce Vita, from Lowburn fruit. With holistic attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery, these wines both reflect and translate the sites they evolve from.

Valli Waitaki North Otago Vineyard

Waitaki North Otago Vineyard (Planted 2001)

"New Zealand’s newest and most exciting wine growing region where, like Burgundy, the soils are limestone based. After only a few commercial vintages, we are already seeing incredible consistency in the perfume and minerality of the wines. Slightly cooler than Central Otago, the Waitaki Valley should not be cropped as heavily, and therefore Valli’s Waitaki Vineyard is close planted at 5000 vines per hectare with early ripening clones from Dijon and Pommard."
