Timorasso

A relatively unknown variety, native to the Piemonte region in Northern Italy – in particular, the appellation of Colli Tortonesi DOC. It is, perhaps, so unknown because it was brought to the brink of extinction throughout the 1960s and ‘70s as local growers pulled up their vines to replace them with more popular varietals, such as Chardonnay. Luckily, during the 1980s, an enterprising grower, Walter Massa, saw the potential in Timorasso as a single-varietal wine, and planted more of it across his vineyards. His success encouraged others to follow, and Timorasso now flourishes throughout the region.

The wines produced from Timorasso tend to be quite aromatic, with lifted notes of apricot and peach, honeysuckle floral tones, and a subtle minerality. They lean towards the medium to full-bodied spectrum, but are balanced with a clean acidity that gives them excellent ageing potential.
