The story of Gewurztraminer comes cloaked in mystery. We know the origins and development of most wine producing grapes, but the backstory of Gewurztraminer remains at least partly unknown. Some believe it to have mutated from the Savagnin grape that originated from the Jura region of France. Others speculate that it came from the Traminer grape due to its name which translates loosely to “Spice Traminer.”
No one, however, has ever figured out its actual origins.
Gewurztraminer’s notes often get compared to lychees, a fruit native to China, Vietnam, and India. They have a floral aroma and taste that some have likened to pears. This gives it a relatively exotic flavour with elements of sweetness, even in dry versions. Other common descriptors are rose, musk, blossom and passionfruit. The wines tend to be off-dry, with any residual sugars being amplified by the wines naturally very aromatic profile
Because of its off-dry style, it is a wine that matches very well to some spicy Asian cuisines, the sugars being a natural antidote to the chilli heat and intensity of flavour. It can also be paired with a range of cheeses.
