WINEFRONT Gary Walsh - 96 Points

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (79%), with 13% Merlot and the rest magical Malbec. Intense fruit of the blackest kind, spice, tobacco and black olive, with cedar oak and a whisper of violet and chocolate. Medium bodied, but firm and well-knit, with bright acidity, an almost juicy pop of small berries, tobacco oak, and gravelly tannin trailing on a long precise and pulsating finish. Almost a hit of liquorice in the aftertaste? This is right in the slot for Margaret. A great release.

Comprised of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 8% Malbec, the 2014 Margaret and is very deep purple-black in colour with lovely blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, violet, cloves and cinnamon stick notes plus a touch of chocolate. Medium-bodied, taut and muscular, this blend has commendably firm tannins with a very long baking spice laced finish. A very classy Bordeaux Blend indeed.

79% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 8% malbec. Good hue; this is a dead centre mainstream Margaret River Bordeaux blend; like its SSB, it is a style that Margaret River achieves effortlessly (well, almost), with cassis, dried herb and black olive in a crib of ripe tannins and a dab of new French oak.

WInery Notes: Woodlands vineyard was established in 1973 by David & Heather Watson on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, and was one of the first five vineyards to be planted in the Margaret River Wine Region. David and Heather aimed to create wines to emulate the great vineyards of Bordeaux. Woodlands came to fame early on with the release of our 1981 ‘Andrew’ Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine won trophies for ‘Best Red Wine’ at the Perth Wine Show, the Mt Barker Wine Show, and the National Wine Show. This wine was the first from Margaret River to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy. Subsequent Cabernets made by David Watson won trophies and critical acclaim across the country.
